Students in grades 5–8 from John Paul II School visited the Rev. George L. Fox Memorial Chapel & Museum for a special day of learning and history. The Rev. George L. Fox Memorial Chapel & Museum school field trip marked the first time a school group toured the chapel and museum.
During the visit, students learned about Rev. George L. Fox, his wife Rev. Isadore H. Fox, and the heroic story of the Four Chaplains during World War II. In addition, students explored exhibits, photographs, and historical items throughout the chapel museum.
Lisa Murray Hirbour, granddaughter of Rev. Fox, guided students through the museum and shared stories about her family’s history and Rev. Fox’s service. As a result, students gained a deeper understanding of sacrifice, courage, faith, and community service.
Rev. George L. Fox Memorial Chapel School Field Trip Teaches Local History
During the Rev. George L. Fox Memorial Chapel school field trip, students learned how the Four Chaplains gave their life jackets to save others after the USS Dorchester was attacked in 1943. Because of this act of bravery, the Four Chaplains became an important symbol of unity and selflessness during World War II.
Students also connected classroom lessons with local history. Meanwhile, they had the opportunity to ask questions and explore the museum at their own pace. In addition, teachers and chapel leaders encouraged students to reflect on the values of kindness, teamwork, and service to others.

A New Educational Tradition
Today’s visit marked an important milestone for the chapel and museum. Additionally, chapel leaders hope the successful program will lead to more school visits and educational partnerships in the future.
The Rev. George L. Fox Memorial Chapel school field trip helped students better understand local history while creating a meaningful and memorable learning experience. Finally, the chapel continues to serve as a place of remembrance, faith, education, and community for visitors of all ages.
